Many heads make light work Many of the products that Roblon's offshore department has developed for the cable, gas and oil industries have been developed in close cooperation with customers around the world. That fact has ensured that standards for both product functionality and product documentation are always extremely high. 'Many of the products we develop are designed to meet special customer requirements,' says Keld Porsmose Larsen, Roblon. 'Often, the customer's own technical department is involved too, so our R&D team and their technical team work together.' 'It's a wonderful way to do it. It's wonderful to hear the dialogue between them and to see the solution getting better and better because two technical teams are brainstorming together.'
Products emerged from creative processes Roblon's ABC tape for 'anti-bird caging' on flexible risers is one of the ISO-certified Roblon solutions which emerged from a creative process involving Roblon and a customer. Roblon High-voltage Pulling Rope is another. 'We developed HVPR after a customer mentioned, almost in passing, that he wished there was a rope which could be used live-line,' recalls Keld Porsmose Larsen. 'In dialogue with the customer and in partnership with a sub-contractor, we developed the product from scratch and less than three months later, it has been tested and approved at a high-voltage lab.'
Documented product quality Testing methods, testing equipment and product documentation are always in focus, says Mr. Larsen. 'We have very exacting documentation standards,' he says. 'Documentation is always important, of course, but in offshore situations it is just unbelievably important, because when you install an offshore solution deep below the sea's surface, you can rarely inspect it in situ.' It is therefore crucially important that the quality and functionality of each individual product has been documented precisely from the very first step, and thereby long before installation,' he says. 'It is essential that both Roblon and the customer have documentation that demonstrates that the product, once installed, not only meets quality requirements, but will continue to meet them for the given product's projected lifetime, which might be 25 or 30 years.'
